THE BIRTH OF THE MUBS -DEBATE SOCIETY

Published on: Mon 23, Jan 2017

After the 2016 University Debate Championships that were at Uganda Martyrs’ University Nkozi, the debaters from MUBS decided to put action into formulating a Debate Society at their University. Needless to mention is that there are quite a number of benefits that come with having a society such as this and these include; regular programming to keep members sharp at all times, regular members who ensure actual growth of the art of debate in the university among others.

As an organization that runs a University Debate Program, when we were approached by the MUBS debaters for support during the process of registering the debate society, it was indeed an opportunity for us as well to have our footprint in a great process. It is important to note that for a student at the University, debate is important as it great improves on public speaking, self-confidence and esteem which are great skills for success in all of life’s spheres.

The process of registration is different in different universities and at MUBS, some of the prerequisites for registration included having a constitution, members and a registration fee. We were with the initial members through the process and supported them especially in the area of capacity building.

On the 2nd of May 2016, the Open Space Team headed to Makerere University Business School in Nakawa to attend the second meeting of the MUBS Debate Society members. It was great to see the strides that the debaters had taken in ensuring that the Society gets registered and that the initial members be elected to ensure that work can start moving. This meeting was at the MUBS Guest House restaurant and was attended by six MUBS Debaters and William from Open Space Centre.

The energy and ambition of these leaders in the making is nothing short of admirable and it is only a matter of time, but we are overly optimistic that in the near future, the MUBS Debate Society will be a force to reckon with. This is said with full confidence as this meeting was held in spite of the fact that exams at the University were only 5 days away.

In this meeting, which was now clearly more structured, also saw the debaters carefully plan out the work they intended to accomplish with the society come next semester which begins in August 2017.

As an organization, we strongly believe that if Debate is going to grow at the grassroots, we need strong working Debate Societies/ Associations to well mentor and train the students in this art of the debate. We are proud to be associated with MUBS Debate Society and we look forward to working with them. For any University that would wish to have a Debate Society formulated at their institution or organize a debate related activity, we are more than willing to provide support where we can.
