The 6th edition of the University Debate Nationals brought together 120 participants from 28 universities (3 from Kenya) and tertiary institutions and was hosted by Ndejje University main campus from 5-11 November 2018 under the theme, "The Refugee Question". Under this theme students discussed, interrogated and analyzed the refugee topic in relation to humanitarian, security and economic impacts to host communities in Uganda and the current state of refugees in the country.
The event was organized by Open Space UG together with National Endowment for Democracy (NED) with media support from Vision Group. Four(4) teams made it to the finals; Gulu University team A, Kyambogo University team B, Uganda Christian University team B and Gulu University team B.
Gulu University team A emerged as champions of the intense competition and excitement was at all time peak as they took home the trophy. Kyambogo University were first runners up as they too put up a spirited fight. An award giving ceremony also took place where certain speakers, judges and other stakeholders were awarded for their outstanding roles in the just concluded intellectual battle. The first ever female recipient of the Justice James Ogoola award was awarded to Miss Sarah Kenyana of Kampala International University, while Mr. John Walaaka took home the award for best public speaker UDN-2018. Personality award went to Miss Diana Nankyinga.
The event which aired live on Urban Television was graced by Mr.Joel Boutroue, the Country Representative for United Nations High Commission for Refugees(UNHCR) as well Isaac Ottai, the guild President-Ndejje University.
