For a long time, we have been told and led to believe that young people are the future, but only if they actively participate in leadership positions, such as those in local government. Young people can make a significant contribution to their communities, create positive change, and help to shape a brighter future for Uganda with their energy, creativity, and enthusiasm.

In some ways, young people are slow to grasp the concept of youth participation in local government because they are unaware of the following facts.

Youth involvement in local government leadership has numerous advantages for both young people and their communities. It allows young people to gain leadership skills, gain decision-making experience, and have a positive impact on their communities. Similarly, it contributes to ensuring that young people’s voices are heard, their needs and concerns are addressed, and their perspectives are considered in local government decision-making processes.

Many people are curious about how young people can effectively participate in local government leadership in Uganda.

Have you ever heard the expression “knowledge is power?” Well, here are some ways that young people can effectively participate:

Understanding the problems: Before expressing an interest in local government leadership, young people should learn about the major issues affecting their community. Attending local council meetings, engaging with community members, and conducting research are all ways to accomplish this. This allows you, as a young person, to gain a better understanding of the issues confronting your community and identify potential solutions.

Creating networks: Young people should create a network of people who share their interest in local government leadership. This can be accomplished appropriately by joining youth groups, attending community events, and participating in local volunteer programs that aim to create a support system and opportunities for collaboration.

Taking the initiative: Young people should be proactive when it comes to local government leadership. Most of the time, this entails proposing new initiatives, interacting with local leaders, and advocating for change. They can also begin by participating in local volunteer projects and work their way up to more significant leadership positions.

Self-education: Young people should educate themselves on the workings of local government as well as the legal framework that governs it. This will assist a young person in better understanding their roles and responsibilities and ensuring their effectiveness in leadership positions.

Seeking mentorship: Most young people today seek mentorship in the wrong places and at the wrong times. Instead, young people can seek mentorship from experienced leaders in their community. This will allow them to learn from those who have already established themselves in positions of leadership and will provide guidance and support as they chart their own course. As we progress toward development, young people are frequently perplexed about who to run to and how to pursue their leadership goals. Who should young people approach if they are interested in serving in local government in Uganda?
